The various types of rituals correspond with a whole range of priests: the most common are the Pemangku’s, who are in charge of temples, although they may also officiate at small ceremonies or as helpers to other priests; the high- priests, though, are the Sulinggih, who are entitled to officiate at larger ceremonies and whose main function consists in preparing the most potent holy waters (Tirta); these priests used to belong to the brahmana caste, but may. now belong to other groups; there are the Pedandas, the Empus and the Rsis; another type of priest is the sengguhu who specializes in exorcism rituals; and there are the balian who may be trance-mediums as well as officiate at small ceremonies.

This omnipresence of religion in Ball is best manifested in the Balinese temple system. It can be argued that there is no aspect of Balinese life which is not formalized in a congregation with its temples, Gods and rituals calendar. All Balinese are members of several temple congregations (up to 10 and more), each of which corresponding to a given aspect of his or her social life: there are family and kinship temples (sanggah/merajan, pura panti, pura dadia, pemaksan, pedharman), neighborhood temples (purabanjar), village temples (pura desa, para puseh, pura dalem), regional temples (pura penataran. Sad Kahyangan, Dang Kahyangan), ricefield and irrigation temples (pura Subak, pura Ulun Siwi), and several others.
